After a major lawsuit, it’s time to ask whether your Indexed Universal Life policy is really the safe bet you were told it was.
You’re sitting at the kitchen table, coffee in hand, flipping through your retirement plan. You’ve been told by your advisor that your Indexed Universal Life (IUL) policy is “a tax‑free income strategy,” “growth plus protection,” “the smart way to bank.”
Then you hear this: a high‐profile professional athlete and his family allege over $8 million in losses after investing heavily in IULs. If someone with access and resources can end up here, the obvious question is: what chance do we have?
This is exactly why we at Money School believe now is the time to shine a light on what’s going on behind the curtain. Here’s what you must understand:
What’s happening with IULs
For years, IULs have been marketed as the “best of both worlds”—permanent life insurance plus upside‐index growth, with the promise of downside protection. Sounds perfect. But the reality is far more complex.
Here are the truths:
- Many IUL policies shift risk from the insurance company to the policy owner—caps, participation rates, premium volatility and cost of insurance can all significantly change the outcome.
- When projections assume perfect conditions (high index returns, no policy loans, no surrender), the illustrated numbers look great—but often real life doesn’t follow that script.
- The recent lawsuit involving Kyle Busch and his wife—claiming more than $10.4 million in premiums paid, with a net alleged loss of ~$8.58 million—is a clear “red flag” moment for many advisors and families.
- By contrast, the Nelson Nash Institute (which created the Infinite Banking Concept®) has reiterated their stance: if you’re using IBC properly, you must use a dividend‑paying whole‑life policy from a mutual insurer, not an IUL.
Why Money School is doubling down on this
We’ve been teaching for years: families deserve to understand not only the promises, but the mechanics behind their life‐insurance + banking strategies.
Because we believe:
- Real financial freedom comes when you control your cash flow and banking system.
- It cannot work if the product you’re using allows your control to be eroded by shifting fees, unpredictable performance metrics or opaque assumptions.
- It’s irresponsible to assume “because the marketing says safe, it is safe.”
So we created a resource bank — what we’re calling the “IUL Repository” — where you’ll find videos of me (Chris Naugle) talking candidly about IULs: the good, the bad, and the often‐hidden details. This is not just fluff; you’ll see deep dives, policy design breakdowns, comparative examples, and straightforward language without confusing jargon.
What you can do now
If you own an IUL or are considering one, don’t wait—put yourself in the driver’s seat:
- Ask for the illustration assumptions: What index is used? What cap and participation rates? What happens in a downturn? Are loans assumed? How long are premiums guaranteed?
- Understand the cost structure: How much is going to the death benefit? How much to fees? What if you reduce premium or take early loans
- Compare with a whole‐life policy designed for IBC: How stable is it? What happens when you borrow from it? What are the actual guarantees vs. speculative growth?
- Think long‑term: Strategies that rely on perfect conditions rarely play out. We advocate for predictable control, less guesswork, real access and use of your capital.
Why this matters
Because the narrative is changing. Families are waking up to the fact that not all “tax‑free” promises hold water when the policy mechanics aren’t fully understood. The lawsuit involving Kyle Busch is just one loud example—but countless families may be quietly walking into similar traps, thinking their IUL is safe.
That’s not what we stand for. At Money School, our goal is simple: Freeing Families From Financial Failure. And that means shining a light on the uncomfortable truths, giving you clear education, and offering a better path.
